Fair Trade School

Fair trade schools recognizes schools whose stakeholders, including the administration, teachers and students, demonstrate a deep commitment to fair trade. This program has a long-term vision of awareness and support for fair trade. It has been designed to provide resources that meet a range of educational objectives.

Obtain the fair trade school designation

Steering committee

Within the Fair Trade School, a steering committee must be formed to ensure a sustained commitment to the local Fair Trade School designation. The committee must:

√ Include one (1) administrator, one (1) teacher and a group of students with at least 2 members (2+);
√ Be responsible for the fair trade designation by meeting the criteria, which includes completing and submitting an application file;
√ Meet with all members at least twice a year to plan and evaluate their fair trade designation. A smaller representation of the committee should meet more frequently to carry out the committee’s duties;

Classroom instruction

A school must demonstrate that fair trade concepts are incorporated into classroom learning by providing:

√ The names and contact information of the instructors who teach fair trade in the classrooms;
√ a description of their learning activities;
√ A sample of student work (may be anonymous);

Product availability

At least two Fair Trade certified products must be available to students and staff on a regular basis (approximately once a week throughout the teaching year).

Visibility and engagement

A school must support ongoing communication and commitment to increase awareness of Fair Trade and Fair Trade certified products in its community:

√ Hold at least one (1) outreach activity in the school or surrounding community;
√ Ensure that the school’s commitment to fair trade is visible to students and staff through public displays;
√ Include information about fair trade on the school website and in the school newsletter;
